Key answer
Treat electricity and gas as separate contracts
Check end dates and notice terms for each fuel, gather accurate meter and consumption data, compare written offers and record the accepted contract. The two fuels may have different suppliers, dates and switching requirements.

Before requesting quotes
Find the MPAN for electricity, MPRN for gas, recent annual consumption and any expected operational change. Confirm whether the current agreements are fixed, variable, deemed or out of contract.
Give termination notice exactly as required and keep evidence. A broker or new supplier can assist, but responsibility for the current contractual process should be clear.
- Record both contract end dates
- Read notice and renewal clauses
- Prepare current bills and readings
- Compare offers on a consistent basis
- Check the first bill for each fuel

After selecting a contract
Retain the principal terms, commission disclosure and comparison. Confirm planned start dates and provide readings where requested. Investigate unexpected rates, estimated readings or overlapping charges promptly.
