Key answer
Confirm the contract end and notice terms first
Read the current agreement, give notice correctly, gather the MPRN and consumption data, compare written offers and retain the accepted terms. Supply meter readings around the change and check the final and opening bills.

The switching sequence
Do not assume that a quote request or new contract automatically satisfies the old supplier's termination process. Keep evidence of any notice and verify the intended change date.
If the premises is changing hands, use the supplier's change-of-tenancy process and record readings. A new occupier may otherwise remain on deemed terms while account details are resolved.
- Confirm end date and termination process
- Gather MPRN, bill and annual consumption
- Compare offers using the same assumptions
- Record the accepted contract
- Check closing and opening meter readings
